I’m going to say unfortunately rape is an uncomfortable topic. For me I have heard about rape and the process after and some of the ways it can change your life. I try to be aware of that but I don’t feel like I can say much beyond it’s wrong and the whole process to get justice is bad and that the event will stay with you. I should also say I hate rape scenes in tv and movies it just leaves me feeling like I want to go punch therapist and go all vigilante on the world. To those who endure the horrific violation just know, I’m here in your court and I’m trying to change people by speaking about consent and empathy and standing up when something is not kosher. I feel the same way! I have never been raped or sexually assaulted but I know people who have. When there’s a rape scene in a movie, I either turn the movie off, or close my eyes and plug my ears if I’m watching a movie in a theater. It makes me sick to my stomach.

I can only imagine. I can’t change the world but I can change your hair shirt. It’s difficult to respond to someone when they share this sort of thing with you. You don’t want to brush someone off with it’s in the past or make a big fuss over them. I’ve had friends disclose trauma like this before. And I generally reply with something like “I’m sorry to hear you had to go through that. Its fucking awesome that you are so strong that you can share your story with me.”
