This farm is over 100 years old, and there’s a lovely graphic timeline on Silverman’s website that walks you through its evolution. Founded in the early 1920s by Bel Silverman, the farm began as a cider mill producing hard and sweet cider before expanding to a pick-your-own farm with more veggies and fruits and berries. (They even provide a how-to video for picking apples.) Now, there’s also a pumpkin patch and an animal farm where guests can feed alpacas, sheep, goats, fallow deer, emus, and long-horn cattle. The farm is open year-round and accepts visitors. Also on site is a market selling Silverman’s dutch apple pies and farm produce and you might even spot a Silverman or two—over a century later, the farm is still in the family. Like Silverman’s, which is just under a half-hour drive away, The Inn at GrayBarns has a long history. In the early 19th century, the white clapboard structure was operating as a textile factory before prohibition came along and it moonlighted as a speakeasy. Years later, it was converted into an inn that hosted the likes of Elizabeth Taylor (on her honeymoon with Eddie Fisher) and Spencer Tracy. The garden grounds have been updated over the years, and now feature several houses on the property in addition to the main house, which welcomes guests with rooms outfitted with wide oak wood floors and bathrooms stocked with Le Labo. Venture outside and you’ll find the Silvermine River, a quaint waterfall, and kept gardens and gravel paths to stroll or bike.

At the Trapp Family Lodge, you might run into Sam Von Trapp—the dedicated director and executive vice president of the alpine lodge in Stowe and the grandson of Maria. He’ll stop by to say hello to guests partaking in the Trapp family history tour, he’ll make the rounds at the Brewery, or you might even catch him bottle-feeding calves in the barn—over the summer, he took a sick calfling home with him for further care. If you don’t spot Sam, you can make an appointment to meet his cows (Scottish Highland Cattle) on a tour that runs throughout the winter. Guests can also sign up for a maple sugar tour that offers a look into the making of the Trapp Family Farm’s maple syrup. Once enough snow collects on the grounds, tours through the sugarbush will commence with snowshoes. After your farm visit, accommodations are as charming as they are convenient. The Lodge offers guest suites and family cottages throughout their sprawling property which overlooks the base of Mount Mansfield State Forest, a spot chosen by Maria as it resembled her beloved Salzburg. Within the hotel, which is outfitted like a traditional Alpine mountain lodge, you’ll find a cozy restaurant and library. Elsewhere on the property, there’s a pool (indoor and out), a Kaffeehaus serving Linzer tarts and apfelstrudel, and a Brewery where the food is farm-fresh. In addition to the farm activities, there’s mountain biking and skiing depending on the time of year.
